Ich erforsche die Deformation der Kruste und starke Erdbeben, hauptsächlich mit Methoden der Geophysik, der Erdbeben-Geologie und der Fernerkundung mit den Schwerpunkten Paläoseismologie und tektonischer Geomorphologie.

Meine Untersuchungsgebiete sind vielfältig. Extensionssysteme habe ich in Deutschland, den USA, Spanien, Peru und Griechenland untersucht, Kollissionstektonik in Zentralasien. Ich interessiere mich darüber hinaus für Tsunamis als Erdbebenproxies und für die Anwendung von Geophysik in der Archäologie.

Derzeit untersuche ich die aktive Tektonik der europäischen Alpen im Rahmen des SPP2017 zusammen mit Kollegen der RWTH Aachen .
